So not long ago I posed a question on LinkedIn asking what one word would you use to describe social media. The question was put to the Staffing and Recruiting section and I was quite surprised with the 81 results that I received. Not from the words that were mentioned, although some are very interesting, but from the sheer volume. Yes it’s a simple question to answer, but what it showed me that the HR community is tuned in to the presence of Social Recruiting.

#SMIR and #Recruitcamp
Over night there were 2 fantastic Social Recruiting conferences on the other side of the globe that I was closely following via Twitter. #SMIR was held in London, organised by Mike Taylor. Mike has a big passion for Social Recruiting and I was lucky enough to be a Track Leader alongside him at #trulondon the first time around. The second conference was in the big old USA, #recruitcamp and although I didn’t follow this as closely there were some great tweets coming out of there too.
When using video in recruitment is a bad idea
Ok, so we all know that I LOVE VIDEO for use across all recruitment functions and the added value that video brings to the table. I’ve written about this in the past see here and hope that one day video will be more common practice then the scarcity it is now.
There are however exceptions to the rule and OH MY GOD, this is one of them.
TweetJobs.net – New Twitter Job Posting Tool
TweetJobs.net is a brand new service out of the UK, that allows jobs to be more then just tweeted. TweetJobs.net allows advertisers to streamline their Twitter job posting requirements by using the easy to use Tweetjobs system. Tweetjobs will take your job posting, extract the most relevant data ensuring that it is most relevant to a targeted candidate, optimise it for SEO and searchability for Google, plus many other search engines, and distribute your job across Twitter into specific, customised channels for candidates to follow and ease of use for you.
My first Video Blog
Ok so today I have decided to do my first video blog on the back of Bill Boormans Radio show earlier this week on blogging, which of course I was on again. I have combined my love of the Iphone (hence some early shakiness) and video to explain 2 things that I found very interesting from a prospective new client meeting earlier today. Be kind this is my first video blog after all. For those of you who know me, will know that I LOVE TO TALK, you will be happy to know this is only 3 minutes long….trust me 10 minutes would have been a breeze.
Is Australia slow & behind?
This morning I had a sensational meeting with a potential business partner for SR360. The one thing that we were both on the same page with is that Australian companies right now don’t know where to start with being involved with Social Media. Backing this up, after the meeting I received an email asking the exact same question; Coincidence?
So here is the question….
“Australia is lacking behind in this field compared to other nations and when do you think the perception of social media recruiting might change in Australia?
It is a great question and one that I attempted to answer.
Are you "On it" or "In it"?
So today I was having a chat with Jared Woods regarding the importance of being involved in Social Media if you are going to advise people on how to maximise its benefits and truly understand the potential that Social Media has. There are many companies out there that are perplexed as to where to start with Social Media, let alone Social Recruiting.
So where do you start if you want to seek advice? There are many people out there who claim to be “Social Media Experts”, so this would seem a logical start. I’m sorry but if you claim this, you are missing the point. Why? Simply, how can anyone be an expert in something that is still so new and changing faster then the wind, it’s just not possible. And what is even more disturbing is that some of these “Experts” are not an active participant in the Social Media platforms that they claim to be the best at.
