Social Media Inception

Over the weekend I finally went and saw Inception. Unless you have been living under a rock you know this movie has something to do with dreams, and stealing them. On the surface that is initially what it is about, however as the movie progresses the key plot is planting an idea in someone’s dream/subconscious [...]

Recruiting in 2021

About eleven years ago Job Boards burst on to the scene to end the demise of print advertising. Whilst that has not entirely occurred, it certainly has made a massive dent in to the once prominent employment sections of the Saturday paper. But what of eleven years from now? Social Media, or Social Recruiting as [...]

Some quick Social Media best practice tips

Recently a question was asked on LinkedIn regarding best practices when it comes to building your LinkedIn and other online networks? Here it is here. A great question and one that many people fail to remember when going about their every day social media strategies. I jotted down a few points I thought were relevant below.

    1. Quality relevant and diverse content
    2. Engaging in conversation
    3. Giving more then receiving
    4. Consistency in your message
    5. Accepting feedback
    6. Trying something new and not being afraid of failure
    7. Listening to your network/community
    8. Integrate across sites where possible and your own company site
    9. Highlighting success and failure and learning from both
    10. Define your objective but be flexible
    11. Get in and do it and have some fun with it.

    A great social recruiting approach

While flicking through tweets last night I cam across something that could my eye and had to investigate further. The tweet in mention was not so much the 140 characters but the username of the user, @ReplaceBrie . My first thought was, is Brie mad, she clearly wants to leave her job, and is letting the world know. I didn’t know who Brie was but felt compelled to dig deeper.

What I found was refreshing and a great use of Social Media and overall approach from the company she works for Adcorp, a recruitment advertising agency here in Australia. Brie tweeted nterested in replacing me? Here’s the details: http://bit.ly/bcGFOw And this is where she works http://twitpic.com/1n37p1

So after clicking through I was pleasantly surprised to be reading a job ad that was straight from Brie (I hope). Brie delves in to her personal life to start and her love of her job, and then outlines in great detail what the Adcorp and her now vacant position are all about. This is nothing new but it is the personal aspect that Brie has delivered that made it one of the better job ads I have read. And I’ve read a few, 5 years working at Seek will do that to you.

    What one word…….

So not long ago I posed a question on LinkedIn asking what one word would you use to describe social media. The question was put to the Staffing and Recruiting section and I was quite surprised with the 81 results that I received. Not from the words that were mentioned, although some are very interesting, but from the sheer volume. Yes it’s a simple question to answer, but what it showed me that the HR community is tuned in to the presence of Social Recruiting.

    #SMIR and #Recruitcamp

Over night there were 2 fantastic Social Recruiting conferences on the other side of the globe that I was closely following via Twitter. #SMIR was held in London, organised by Mike Taylor. Mike has a big passion for Social Recruiting and I was lucky enough to be a Track Leader alongside him at #trulondon the first time around. The second conference was in the big old USA, #recruitcamp and although I didn’t follow this as closely there were some great tweets coming out of there too.

When using video in recruitment is a bad idea

Ok, so we all know that I LOVE VIDEO for use across all recruitment functions and the added value that video brings to the table. I’ve written about this in the past see here and hope that one day video will be more common practice then the scarcity it is now.

There are however exceptions to the rule and OH MY GOD, this is one of them.

    My first Video Blog

Ok so today I have decided to do my first video blog on the back of Bill Boormans Radio show earlier this week on blogging, which of course I was on again. Be kind this is my first video blog after all. For those of you who know me, will know that I LOVE TO TALK, you will be happy to know this is only 3 minutes long….trust me 10 minutes would have been a breeze.
